Housetops sweeping through Alabama

is a journey into America’s Deep South A fusion of storytelling, craft, and contemporary design. Housetops Sweeping through Alabama is a quilted collection that pays homage to the iconic traditions of quilting throughout America. Inspired by my research in creative practice throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, the collection reinterprets the traditional quilt blocks and craftsmanship of the Deep South through an innovative design lens.Rooted in the patchwork legacy of quilting traditions around the Deep South, the
collection explores the raw beauty and improvisational spirit of quilting—transforming
historical textile techniques into sculptural, modern and wearable pieces. Each piece
responds to my research into the resilience, resourcefulness, narratives and power
of textiles.

Bold geometric patterns, clean compositions, and a rich colour palette define the
collection, drawing parallels between traditional quilting techniques and
contemporary silhouettes. The interplay of texture and structure creates a visual
dialogue between past and present, tradition and modernity, craft and couture.
My journeys through Alabama and Mississippi unearthed a profound appreciation for
and celebration of the power of textile and quilted storytelling. Working closely with
the women of Gees Bend and the Gee’s Bend Quilting Collective, I embraced the
intuitive approach to traditional craftsmanship. Without this inspiration of a small
town on a bend in the Alabama River, this collection would not have been created.
